A Lighthouse Keeper's Solitude (2023)
Role: Editor and Projection Mapper
“A Lighthouse Keeper’s Solitude” is a short abstract nature film I collaborated on for my Mixed Realities module for a projection mapping brief. It is about Arthur, a lonely lighthouse keeper who lives an isolated life in the lighthouse. The film describes Arthur and his beautiful surroundings on the beach.

For the projection mapping, we created a mirror effect across two corners. Originally, we were going to project the lighthouse onto the poles in the X-Gallery, however we later realised this wouldn’t be feasible as it would have looked awkward and not presented in the way we would’ve expected.

Although the projection mapping itself is not as ambitious compared to other projection mapping pieces created by my cohort, I do believe the mirrored effect complements the peaceful nature of the film due to its simplicity and the fact it makes the film more abstract.

I think the sound design is also very strong, and we used sound effects that were appropriate to the beach theme, such as waves, seagulls, and wind. It would have been more effective if we sourced our own sound effects too, however the foley works well enough and achieves its intended purpose.

I think the cinematography is excellent too and complements the peaceful nature of the film. There are a variety of shots, such as close up/wide shots of the lighthouse, as well as wide shots of the beach itself. However, some of the footage is quite shaky (despite filming on a tripod), which detracts from the experience.

Overall, I think this was a strong interpretation of the projection mapping piece. However, I would have liked it if we were more ambitious in the projection mapping approach, rather than simply having a mirrored effect. This made our projection mapping film much more junior than the other projection mapping films.

Below is the film projected on the wall.
